Our story

One determined woman, and a vision.

Borradaile Trust grew from the vision of the late Dorothy Bell, wife of the late Reverend Lionel Borradaile Bell, who saw the need for a retirement village for pensioners in Marondera.

The Trust is non-sectarian, non-racial and non-denominational. It is founded on Anglican tradition and run on Christian principles. Our chapel welcomes residents of every denomination.

  1. 1951Dorothy Bell forms a committee, wins the support of the State Lotteries and the Town Planning Office, and begins raising funds.
  2. April 1952With further donations from well-wishers, the first buildings begin.
  3. 24 November 1952The first residents move into the first cottage.

Care & support

Support that grows with you.

The Trust has three schemes, so residents can move to more support when they need it.

A Scheme

The Cottages

Self-catering cottages for residents who are still able to fend for themselves. Many residents are keen gardeners.

B Scheme

The Cloisters & the Close

Residents have their own rooms with bathrooms and small gardens, serviced for them, with three meals a day in the dining rooms.

C Scheme

Borradaile House

Frail care, with full care in every respect from professional nursing staff and nurse aides.

Life here includes Sunday chapel services, Bible study groups, two libraries, bridge, Scrabble, croquet and walks in the extensive, fenced and guarded grounds. Pets are part of the community too.

Support us

Help us keep this haven open.

Regular gifts from well-wishers have kept the Trust going. Our reserves are now at a dangerously low level, and the local farming community that once supported us has largely gone, so we rely on outside support more than ever.

Many of our residents retired on plans that were wiped out when the Zimbabwe dollar collapsed. Help of any amount keeps the Trust viable, and there is major plumbing and electrical renovation still to be done.

To give, or to ask how, please get in touch with the Warden’s office and we will explain the ways to donate.

In Zimbabwe the Trust is registered with the Ministry of Social Welfare as a Welfare Institution (W/O 236/68), so donations attract a tax deduction. It is also registered in the U.K. under The Thomas Benyon Settlement Trust, Charity No. 271133.
